    History:

The Hotel Château Gütsch is located high above the city of Lucerne since 1884. The Bell company from Kriens built a typical water ballast funiculars with 2 parallel tracks as a contemporary access of this era. Worldwide, there are only 10 older installations with 2 parallel tracks still in operation. In Switzerland, the Gütschbahn is the oldest installation with 4 rails that is still in operation. In 1960 it was electrified and in 1961 it operated all year round for the first time.

From 2008 - 2015, the Gütschbahn was out of service. For a long time it was very questionable whether the Gütschbahn would ever run again. Fortunately, the population of Lucerne said YES to the Gütschbahn in a referendum on 30.11.2014.

The Gütschbahn was rebuilt in 2015 by the well-known company Inauen-Schätti. The new system are 2 independent inclined elevators side by side. The new Gutsch funicular was opened on 26.09.2015. A ride on the new Gütschbahn takes exactly 100 seconds.

Again, enjoy the ride with the famous Gütsch funicular !

    History:

VonRoll built the steep railway in 1926 on behalf of the Oberhasli KWO power plant. In the early years, it was used for the construction work at the Gelmersee and the Grimsel hydroelectric power plants. In later years, tourists were also transported more and more frequently. In 2001 Garaventa completely modernized the funicular. The original car frame from 1926 (already with security brakes) received an open wooden superstructure.

Since 15.12.2017, the new Stoosbahn is the steepest, public funicular in Switzerland with 2 cars and a switch. The Gelmerbahn continues to be the steepest, public winch railroad in the world with one carriage that is additionally open.
